How Shillong Morning Teer Works: Plateau Archery Rules & Timing
1. What is Shillong Morning Teer?
Shillong Morning Teer is an early-morning traditional archery tournament staged at the Polo Grounds open archery practice field in Shillong, East Khasi Hills. Conducted six days weekly from Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays), the morning event opens the competition day for regional traditional sports clubs. Fifty selected indigenous archers assemble at dawn to test handmade cane bows and bamboo arrows across two timed sequences: Round 1 commences at 10:30 AM IST followed by Round 2 at 11:30 AM IST.
2. Morning Shooting Conditions & Arrow Ballistics
Shooting takes place across an outdoor 50-yard range facing traditional cylindrical straw targets known locally as skum. Morning archers must navigate the unique microclimate of the Shillong plateau, where morning fog, dew, and brisk highland breezes directly influence reed arrow flight and release velocity. Under the watchful eyes of club marshals, archers unleash their designated quiver of arrows within a strict five-minute whistle-controlled window.
3. Audited Arrow Counting & The Two-Digit Score Rule
At the conclusion of each shooting round, range officials extract and count valid arrows lodged firmly in the target face. The official winning number equals the last two digits of the total verified arrow count. If 784 arrows hit the target in the morning session, the declared winning score is 84. If the count reaches 609 arrows, the declared winning score is 09. Results are cross-checked and published across registered counter networks.
